Your privacy and the confidentiality of information you share with the betterMD network is one of our top priorities. As a member of the betterMD network (patients, doctors and providers) we want you to trust in the fact that the betterMD network will protect and honor the private nature of our relationship. This Privacy Policy will explain what information we collect, how we protect it and what choices you have about how that information is used. We urge you to read our Privacy Policy so that you will understand both our commitment to you and your privacy, and how you can participate in that commitment.

Please remember that any information (including personal and medical information) that you reveal in the public areas (such as a discussion forum, mail list, chat room/event) is not subject to this Privacy Policy and will be seen by third parties not related to betterMD and may be used by them to contact you or for unauthorized purposes. Also, if you link out of to another site not under betterMD control, any information you reveal on that site is not subject to this Privacy Policy. You should review the privacy policies of each site you visit.

We also collect patient-reported values on a continuing basis as a part of the treatment plan supervision, as well as information that you voluntarily provide to us through responses to surveys, questionnaires and other forms of feedback.

We also collect information about you and your use of our site through the use of Cookies, as well as HTTP headers included when your computer requests a page from our site. HTTP headers are somewhat anonymous, and tell us what type of browser you are using and how you are connected to the Internet. In most cases this information is used in aggregate to determine site demographics and are not able to be associated with you specifically. "Cookies" are small text files that we transfer to your computer (some are stored in memory temporarily and others may be stored on your computer - if you have chosen to have your browser "remember" information from one session to another.) This information helps us dynamically generate advertising and content on web pages specifically designed for you and also allows us to statistically monitor how many people are using our site and for what purpose. Sponsors and advertisers may also use Cookies when you select their advertisement; we are unable to control their use of Cookies or how they manage the information they gather.

When you complete Registration or your Member Profile, you will be given the option of receiving recurring informational/promotional emails from and/or third parties. You may opt out of receiving these emails when you provide the information or by changing your preferences within your Member Profile at any time.

How will the information be used?

The information gathered at has many uses. In general this can be broken into three categories:
  1. Registration/Profile Information - this information is used to establish your personal account and recordkeeping system. It is an integral part of establishing your baseline medical profile against which all future results can be measured.
  2. Treatment Plan/Self-Reporting - this is the heart of the betterMD treatment plan. By reporting your weight, food diary, exercise log and other relevant statistics, the system is able to compare your outcomes to benchmarks and make the appropriate recommendations to optimize your treatment. NOTE - with your permission, this information will be shared with your primary care physician to ensure the highest possible standards-of-care.
  3. Internet Preferences - these preferences will be used to personalize your experience at the web site, making your interactions with the system as convenient as possible based on your personal preferences.

To whom will the information be distributed?

Effective implementation of your treatment plan requires that both your baseline profile information and your self-reported records be shared with your primary care physician and healthcare professional (dieticians, exercise physiologist and behavioral counselors.) This is done with your explicit permission.

The betterMD network will not disclose to unaffiliated companies any information it gathers from you which could be used to identify or contact you. Any information provided to entities affiliated with betterMD will be treated in accordance with the terms of this Privacy Policy, unless you are otherwise notified. In the following limited circumstances we will consider, and may release, information to third parties: (1) to comply with valid legal requirements such as a law, regulation, search warrant, subpoena or court order; or (2) in special cases, such as a physical threat to you or others. We also provide information to our vendors and suppliers where it is necessary for them to provide us with products and services related to better operation and maintenance of our website. We will attempt to require that each of these vendors not further use or disclose this information for any purpose other than providing us or you with products and services. Of course, we cannot guarantee their compliance with these restrictions

betterMD may provide information about you which does not allow you to be identified or contacted to third parties. For example, we might inform third parties regarding the number of users of our site and the activities they conduct while on our site. We might also inform a pharmaceutical company (that may or may not be an advertiser on our site) that "30% of our users live east of the Mississippi" or that "25% of our users have tried alternative medicine." Depending on the circumstances, we may or may not charge for this information.

How will betterMD protect the loss, misuse or alteration of information under the company's control?

The betterMD network places the utmost importance on the security of your personal records. Whenever you submit or modify information at, we will send such information over the Internet using Secure Socket Layer, version 3 (or other later versions) ("SSL") encryption technology. The information you submit to will be stored at our secure Internet Service Center. This facility is located in Sterling, Virginia, USA, and consists of 33,000 square feet of raised floor space, and provides the highest levels of security, monitoring and backup systems. Security systems include 24 hour-a-day video recording and on-site security personnel. Backup power sources are provided by uninterrupted dual battery and generator backup systems with a three-day fuel supply available on-site.

We enforce a strict code of conduct for those employees that are permitted to access our customers' personal information. Only authorized betterMD employees are permitted to access your personal information. All betterMD employees must abide by our Privacy Policy and those who violate our Privacy Policy are subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination and prosecution.

Please note that you are responsible for taking all reasonable steps to ensure that no unauthorized person shall have access to your password or account. It is your sole responsibility to (1) control the dissemination and use of usernames and passwords; (2) authorize, monitor, and control access to and use of your account and password; (3) promptly inform betterMD of any need to deactivate a password; (4) immediately inform the betterMD network of a suspected breach of security. You grant betterMD and all other persons or entities involved in the operation of the website the right to receive, transmit, monitor, retrieve, store and use your personal information, including information which may be privileged and confidential under applicable state and federal laws, in connection with the operation of and subsequent program applications.

How can I correct any inaccuracies in the information?

You can always contact us in order to delete your Personal Information from our systems, update the Personal Information that you have provided to us, and change your preferences with respect to marketing contacts, by sending an e-mail message to - or contact us directly from the site.

You can also edit your profile information from the appropriate membership area of the web site. For example, patients may edit their information by accessing the profile editor from within the Patient Center.

The betterMD network may change this Privacy Policy at any time by posting revisions to our website. Your use of the site constitutes acceptance of the provisions of this Privacy Policy and your continued usage after such changes are posted constitutes acceptance of each revised Privacy Policy. If you do not agree to the terms of this Privacy Policy or any revised policy, please exit the site immediately.
